Private tutoring · Advanced Curriculum

For students in the 160s whose scores have plateaued.

Twenty-two one-on-one sessions across four lessons, built around the most demanding and unorthodox questions on the LSAT. The goal is a score in the 99th percentile on test day.

Who it is for

Built for the last ten points.

The Advanced Curriculum is for students who already know the exam and are scoring in the mid-to-high 160s. At that level the remaining points come from the most demanding, unorthodox and novel questions the LSAT can ask, and from a more sophisticated understanding of what each section is testing and how.

The lessons have been refined and expanded over the years, but the aim has not changed: a score in the 99th percentile on the day of the exam.

If you are not sure the Advanced Curriculum is the right fit, start with the diagnostic session. We recommend a curriculum after we have seen you work.

Syllabus

Four lessons, twenty-two sessions.

X

Logical Reasoning: arguments and assumptions

Lesson X covers the fundamentals of the Logical Reasoning section, starting with techniques for identifying arguments and evaluating their validity. Students go beyond the usual definitions of logical reasoning to a closer examination of the relationship at the heart of every argument: the conclusion and its premise.

Students are also introduced to our Subject-Verb Relevance Test, a tool for evaluating answer choices for logical relevance.

  • Assumption
  • Strengthen
  • Justify the Conclusion
  • Weaken
  • Resolve the Paradox

Topics: invalid arguments, assumptions, logical relevance, causal reasoning.

Y

Logical Reasoning: the Inference family

Lesson Y shifts to a different family of questions. Students learn to recognize the variety of questions that test principles, to handle abstraction, and to use strategies such as “cohesive devices” in a stimulus and the “lowest hanging fruit” in an answer choice, which improve timing without sacrificing accuracy.

The lesson closes with a thorough treatment of the two remaining question types, Parallel Reasoning and Parallel Flaw.

  • Main Point
  • Inference
  • Point at Issue
  • Method of Reasoning
  • Method of Reasoning—Role
  • Flaw in the Reasoning
  • Parallel Reasoning
  • Parallel Flaw

Topics: Inference family questions, advanced conditional reasoning, assumptions vs. inferences, principles.

P

Reading Comprehension

The Reading Comprehension section tests your ability to read for structure: to understand how the parts of a passage relate to one another. Lesson P introduces a complete RC strategy for reading passages effectively and answering the questions efficiently.

Students also work through the types of Inference questions that appear in the section, a framework for identifying viewpoints, and specific techniques with a track record of improving scores.

Topics: advanced Reading Comprehension strategies, Inference questions in RC, passage structure.

M

Recent trends on the LSAT

Lesson M gives special attention to recently disclosed exams, to anticipate what your exam is likely to ask. Students work through the trends we expect to see on test day, with a review of selected practice tests.

  • Assumptions vs. inferences
  • Causal reasoning trends
  • Tricky question stems
  • “Even if” language
  • Weaken question conclusions

Format: advanced seminar on recent innovations and trends, with review of selected PTs.

Your instructor

Full-time, and in the 99th percentile.

Every Theoryworks instructor teaches the LSAT as a full-time profession and has an official LSAT score in the 99th percentile on file, from an exam administered on or before November 2019. You work with the same instructor from the first session to the exam, with practice tests reviewed together and Slack access for questions between sessions.
